Tired of The New Year Resolutions Hype?

Over the last several weeks, I’ve heard dozens of people talk about New Year’s resolutions. I’ve read countless emails about goal setting and how to make 2016 your best year ever and you know what? I’m sick of hearing about it!

I’m sick of everyone talking about making 2016 a better year and not telling you the other side of the coin. It’s almost like they are hyping up the new year so much you will completely forget about the reality of life and what many of us are going to face in 2016.

Look.  I’m just as excited about this new year as anyone else. Yes, I have set some goals, laid out some plans, inked some strategies, and as long as I can keep my daily actions in place, I’m confident I’ll achieve some or most of them. If you’ve done something similar, good job. I too, hope you will reach what you are striving for. But here is the ugly reality that very few, if any, are talking about; Many won’t.

Yes, I said it and no, I’m not being negative. The truth is, a fair amount of people won’t reach their goals. Some won’t follow through with their resolutions and some will even give up before Valentines Day gets here. Sad.

Here is another ugly, truism (is that even a word). Some of us are going to go through a lot of crap this year. Bankruptcy, divorce, loss of a job, home or worse yet, lose someone they love to a premature death. Do I wish any of this on anyone? Of course not! Never. But this is life we’re talking about. Some are going to experience bad things and there may be little to nothing that can be done to stop or change the outcome. However, the good news is, each of us will have 100% control over how we respond to it.

It’s the same with goal setting. Regardless of what happens, we always have total and complete control on how we react to it. Just like how little or how much we put towards reaching our goals. It’s a choice. Regardless of the circumstances, we always have a choice and it’s that choice, that determines the majority of how our life works out.

If you set goals or made resolutions over the last couple of weeks, you likely did so when you were feeling good about them. For some, they might have even been able to visualize themselves achieving them, feeling like a million bucks once they pictured it complete. It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? I know, I’ve been there, it’s exhilarating! But trust me, those feelings are going to fade away and those goals you made, probably won’t seem so obtainable and when this happens, you have two choices. Keep charging forward or give up.

You shouldn’t be surprised. What other options are there? It really comes down to those two things. But here’s the catch.  One of those choices makes things very different. It leads to fulfillment, meaning, purpose, a sense of success and a much, much different outcome. A sense of pride will likely follow too. The other one, unfortunately, holds with it regret, embarrassment and even a drop in self esteem.  Sorry, but it’s true.

Wherever you are at in the goal setting equation, you need to remember: tomorrow, life could bring you to an intersection and at that intersection is a choice. No, it may not be pretty and the answer may not be crystal clear, I understand that. However, one way brings with it the things your heart wants and the other way, well… not so much. The choice will be yours. Always has been and it’s all up to you.

My hope for you in this new year, is for you to make the choice that brings with it health, love, happiness and meaning to your life. In your heart, you know what that is.

Have a blessed 2016 – Make great choices this year.
